Going back in time, Dhritarashtra and Pandu were two brother princes of the kingdom of Hastinapura. As Dhritarashtra was the elder of the two, so according to tradition, he had the right to the throne. But, Dhritarashtra was blind from birth, in such case the throne was offered to the younger brother Pandu.
Where Pandu was married to ‘Kunti’, sister of Vasudeva, Dhritarashtra was married to ‘Gandhari’, the princess of Gandhara. Let us tell you, Vasudev was the father of Shri Krishna, thus Krishna was the nephew of Kunti.
Dhritarashtra and Gandhari had 100 sons, while Pandu had five sons. While the sons of Pandu were known as ‘Pandava’, the sons of Dhritarashtra were called ‘Kaurav’. The eldest of the Kauravas was ‘Duryodhana’, while the eldest of the Pandavas was ‘Yudhisthir’ who was the eldest among the Kauravas and Pandavas.

When Pandu dies due to a curse, the throne is given to Dhritarashtra, as the prince Yudhisthir who had the right to rule was too young to handle the responsibility. But when the time to hand over the kingdom came, Pandavas were offered a barren part of the kingdom, called Khandavprastha, and Duryodhana was made the king of Hastinapura. But with the help of Lord Krishna Pandavas transformed the barren land into the magnificent city of Indraprastha.
The jealous Duryodhana could not digest all this and invited the Pandavas to a ‘chaupad’ game, which was equivalent to Ludo, in the game Yudhishthira put everything at stake and lost his wealth, kingdom, and property. The Pandavas were also sent into exile for thirteen years.
Completing the exile period, when Pandavas return and asked for their kingdom, Duryodhana refused to give them anything saying, ‘I will not give you Pandavas a place equal to the point of a needle,’ which led to the biggest war in the Hinduism, known worldwide as ‘Mahabharata’. It is believed that the warfare lasted for 18 days, and 166 crore warriors died in this one of the deadliest and gravest wars this planet has ever seen.

But before the war started, Kshatriya warrior and one of the Pandavas, Arjuna refused to battle with his own cousin brothers, Gurus, Relatives, and Friends who were fighting for Kauravas, stating that he does not want a kingdom, to win, he has to kill his own loved ones. At that time, Lord Krishna, a human form of Lord Vishnu, one of the principal deities of Hinduism, recited 700 verses to Arjuna, which are collectively known as ‘Bhagavad Gita’.
