Youth Day 2022: On June 16th, South Africa celebrates Youth Day, a federal holiday. When Youth Day occurs on a Sunday, the following Morning is designated as a national holiday.

Youth Day commemorates the start of the 1976 Soweto riots, which was originally recognized as Soweto Day.

Youth Day 2022: Background

The riots were sparked by the president’s policy to require 100% Afrikaans instruction in black schools.

The problem was not so much Afrikaans instruction as it was the entire educational structure, which was marked by segregated colleges and universities, substandard facilities, large classes, and teachers who were not appropriately trained again for the black majority.

On June 16, 1976, over 30,000 Soweto students took part in a protest march. Approximately 700 individuals, many more of them youngsters, were slain and equipment was destroyed during multiple battles with the government and occasional bloodshed in the next few months.

The image of a black schoolkid being shot by cops has become iconic (Hector Pieterson),

Hector Pieterson, who was only 12 years old at the time, was among the first youngsters to die as a result of the student uprising. A post-mortem indicated, according to SA History Online, that Pieterson was murdered by a shot being fired straight at him, not by a bullet “ricocheting off the ground,” as authorities stated.

A photograph of Pieterson’s unconscious body being conducted by Mbuyisa Makhubu with his sister Antoinette Sithole near the area became an iconic picture of the 1976 Student Protests, circulating the universe and highlighting the Segregation regime’s atrocities to many people both within and without South Africa.

Youth Day remembers these events by providing a day off for school pupils across South Africa.
