Every year on the night before Makar Sankranti, the festival of Lohri is celebrated with great pomp. Lohri is celebrated every year on 13 January. Lohri is mainly considered a festival of the Sikh community, but in today’s time, people of other communities have also started celebrating it. The festival of Lohri is celebrated as the harvesting and sowing of crops. On this day people light fire and dance and sing and celebrate around it. There is a tradition of burning Gar, Til, Rewari, Gajak and then distributing them among themselves. Popcorn and sesame seeds are also distributed on this day. This festival is celebrated during the harvest season in Punjab. On this day everyone dances and sings. All the mothers walk around the Lohri fire with their little ones in their hands and offer peanuts, raisins, dry fruits, gajak, popcorn, etc. to the fire. Many types of wood are collected from several days before Lohri. Those who are gathered properly in a good place in the middle of the city where everyone can gather and on the night of Lohri, all sit around this bonfire with their loved ones.
