Annually April 26 is observed as World Intellectual Property Day to spread awareness about the role of intellectual property rights in promoting innovation and creativity. The development and application of international norms and standards for intellectual property protection is a fundamental part of the WIPO’s activities. Its objective is to lead the development of a balanced and effective global intellectual property system that enables innovation and creativity for the benefit of all. Considering the enormous importance of intellectual property, the Government of India has taken extensive measures to streamline its administration in the country.
In October 1999, the General Assembly of WIPO approved the idea of declaring a special day as World Intellectual Property Day. In the year 2000, WIPO decided to observe April 26 as this day to remove the perceived distinction between intellectual property as a commercial/legal concept and its importance in people’s lives. The date April 26 was chosen because the World Intellectual Property Organization was established on this day in the year 1970.
World Intellectual Property Day provides an opportunity for IP offices, enterprises, and innovators to discuss and connect with each other about new innovations that will help shape the world and improve people’s lives. The purpose of this day is to promote awareness about the importance of patents, copyrights, trademarks, and designs.
