High School Study Method: What to do at Home

Whether you decide to study at home, with friends, or in the library, please make it the right place to stay focused, with nothing or anyone to distract you.

If you have been attentive and involved at school, you will see that you will finish studying in a heartbeat!

1. Don’t procrastinate and study day by day

I know that once you return home after a whole morning of school, if not part of the afternoon, it becomes difficult to find the desire to get on with books and study again. On the other hand, you certainly deserve a little rest and entertainment and no one denies you a few hours to rest your brain and regain energy.

But don’t fall into the mistake of not studying every day, from time to time. I know it sounds like an urban legend that you always hear whispered in the corridors of schools, an ancient myth told by the teachers to the first children… but it’s the truth and it can be done! Indeed, it is the right method to not accumulate the stuff to study to the point of never seeing the end.

Every day when you come home from school, just relax and then get to study and do your homework. Turn off the TV, disable cell phone notifications, find a quiet spot and sit at your desk with books and notebooks. Find the Motivation to Get to Work!

Start small: 7 minutes

If you just can’t find the desire, try to start studying for just 7 precise minutes: it is unlikely that in this time frame you will be able to finish a topic, so you will see that leaving it incomplete will push you to want to study again and later. maybe you will be encouraged to continue. I did not invent it, this trick is part of the Zeigarnik Effect that pushes you to want to conclude something that has begun.

Do the Easier Things First

Normally they tell you to start with the hardest things, to face them with a fresh mind, but I go against the tide and suggest you start with something simple.

Before running, a sprinter warms up, he doesn’t start off immediately. In the same way, you can warm up starting from the review of the things already studied. The awareness of remembering the things seen in the past days will give you the right motivation to start studying new topics.

Review the Notes for the Day

Once back home, review the notes taken during the school morning. You can rewrite them in a fair copy if you deem it necessary, perhaps integrating important information from the book.

If you can keep this pace every day, taking notes in class and reviewing them at home the same day, your study will be enormously speeded up because you will have almost unconsciously consolidated the important information which, therefore, during the final study, will not turn out to be completely new and strangers and studying will be easier and faster.

2. Use study cycles

I have already told you several times that a person’s attention physiologically begins to decline after 40 minutes.

So the trick to not lose concentration is to study for cycles of 40 minutes each, interspersed with a 15-minute break in which to do whatever you want to disconnect the brain, plus 5 minutes to devote to reviewing what you were studying before.

3. Study to Explain and Not to Learn

Remember that you don’t have to memorize the lesson.

Get into the perspective of studying a topic to become able to best explain it to someone else. In fact, you can be sure that you really understand a concept when you are able to re-explain it in your own words and simplify it.

4. Simulate Queries

Practice speaking aloud so that you can sustain a loose exposure.  Try to answer the questions that you will have marked during the questions of your teammates and while you do so, pay attention to:

  • Use appropriate and correct terminology;
  • Don’t take the answer too far, but get straight to the point;
  • Don’t go off-topic;
  • If necessary, be able to give examples;

By now you know the essential things to make the most of your high school days. Apply these tips and you will no longer have any obstacles. Remember that the Study Method can only improve and become more effective with practice and as you use it you will also realize what is good and what needs to be changed. because over time the way of studying also changes.

In the End

Building up this skill takes a lot of time but it is worth it. So, it might be a good idea to get help from an essay writer, as you’re working on improving yourself.
