The day after Diwali is dedicated to Govardhan Puja, which is also called Annakut Puja. In order to protect the people of Vrindavan from Lord Indra’s wrath, which resulted in heavy downpours and flooding, Lord Krishna built the Govardhan hill, also known as Giri Govardhan, on this day in history. The Govardhan Puja honors the triumph of Lord Krishna defeating Lord Indra.
Govardhan Puja 2023: Date and Time
Govardhan Puja is held on November 14 this year. The Pratipada Tithi begins on November 13 at 2:56 PM and ends on November 14 at 2:36 PM. The hours of 06:43 AM to 08:52 AM are auspicious for the morning Goverdhan Puja.
History
Legend has it that while Lord Krishna was in Vrindavan, he advised people to worship the Govardhan hill and cows rather than the god of rain, Lord Indra. Indra became enraged and proceeded to pour down heavy rain over Vrindavan. In response, Krishna raised Govardhan Hill with his little finger, giving the residents a seven-day haven.
In observance of this occasion and to ask Lord Krishna for his mercy, Govardhan Puja is held. In the early morning, practitioners of Govardhan Puja begin the ceremony by taking a bath before sunrise. They then use panchamrita, a concoction of milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar, to clean an idol of Balgopal.
After that, the idol is embellished with fresh apparel, jewels, and blossoms. The Mathura and Vrindavan temples host parades, aartis, and prayers. Worshippers take part in the Govardhan Yatra.

Festive feasts, beautifully adorned homes, and unique bazaars with Krishna sculptures and toys bring Rajasthan to life. In Odisha, confections like chenapod and chhenagaja are offered to Lord Krishna.
