Guidelines issued by Centre for using hydrogen fuel in transport sector

The Ministry of New Renewable Energy has announced the implementation of a National Green Hydrogen Mission with a total budgetary outlay of ₹955 crore till the financial year 2029-30. Under this mission, pilot projects will be undertaken for using green hydrogen in the transport, shipping, and steel sectors.

The central government has issued guidelines for the implementation of these pilot projects, which will focus on replacing fossil fuels and fossil fuel-based feedstock with green hydrogen and its derivatives. The scheme aims to support the development of technologies for the use of green hydrogen as a fuel in buses, trucks, four-wheelers, and ships, as well as the development of infrastructure like hydrogen refueling stations.

The use of green hydrogen in the transport sector through these pilot projects is expected to lead to the development of necessary infrastructure, resulting in the establishment of a green hydrogen ecosystem in the transport sector.

Similarly, the central government has also come out with guidelines for undertaking pilot projects for using green hydrogen in the steel sector. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, pilot projects will be implemented in the steel sector, focusing on the use of hydrogen in the Direct Reduced Iron making process, the Blast Furnace, and the substitution of fossil fuels with green hydrogen in a gradual manner.

The implementation of these pilot projects in the transport, shipping, and steel sectors is expected to contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions and the development of a green hydrogen ecosystem in these industries. The guidelines also note that upcoming steel plants should be capable of operating with green hydrogen, ensuring their participation in future global low-carbon steel markets.

Overall, the National Green Hydrogen Mission and the pilot projects to be implemented under it represent a significant step towards achieving India’s renewable energy and environmental sustainability goals.
