Vaping can make you more prone to Covid infection: Study

New York, Feb 27 (IANS) A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of California, Riverside, has found that vapers are more likely to be susceptible to infection by the SARS-CoV-2 virus compared to tobacco smokers. The study revealed that the composition of e-liquids in electronic cigarettes plays a crucial role in influencing Covid-19 outcomes.

The study highlighted that propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and nicotine present in e-liquids enhance Covid infection through various mechanisms. However, the addition of benzoic acid to e-liquids was found to prevent infection caused by these components. Users who vape aerosols with acidic pH levels have the same viral susceptibility as non-users, while those using aerosols with neutral to basic pH levels are at higher risk of infection.

To conduct the study, airway stem cells from human donors were used to create a 3D tissue model of human bronchial epithelium. Subsequently, the tissues were exposed to JUUL and BLU electronic cigarette aerosols to observe the impact on SARS-CoV-2 infection. The findings indicated an increase in ACE2 receptors and enhanced activity of TMPRSS2 enzyme, both crucial for the virus to infect cells, in tissues exposed to nicotine aerosols.

Prue Talbot, a professor at the University, advised e-cigarette users to be cautious about their vaping habits as certain products can elevate their susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection. She suggested that quitting vaping may be beneficial for both their health and to overcome nicotine dependency. Additionally, Rattapol Phandthong, a postdoctoral researcher involved in the study, cautioned that vapers who contract SARS-CoV-2 may experience more complications during recovery and are at a higher risk of developing long Covid-19.

In conclusion, the research underscores the importance of understanding the impact of vaping on Covid-19 outcomes and emphasizes the need for vapers to consider the potential risks associated with their habit. The study’s findings aim to encourage vapers to quit vaping and discourage non-users from starting this harmful practice.
