WPL 2024: DC spinner Jess Jonassen reflects on thrilling final over against RCB, saying “I knew at the start of the over”

After a thrilling win by Delhi Capitals (DC) over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Australian spinner Jess Jonassen shared her strategy for the nail-biting final over that secured their victory on the last ball of the match.

Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey played key roles in batting as Delhi Capitals posted 181/5 in 20 overs. Despite Richa Ghosh’s late onslaught of 51 runs in 29 balls, Royal Challengers Bangalore fell short in chasing the target.

With 17 runs needed in the last over, Richa hit two sixes off Jonassen’s bowling, bringing the equation down to 2 off 1. However, Delhi Capitals held their nerve and clinched a last-ball win, securing their spot in the playoffs for the second consecutive season.

Reflecting on the intense final over, Jonassen noted, “I internally knew that at the start of the over, if I could set it up without going for a boundary in one of the first two balls, then we were sort of well and truly on the front foot.”

Jonassen, who currently leads the wicket-taking charts in the season with 10 wickets in five matches, emphasized the importance of consistency despite holding the Purple Cap. She stated, “Since I’ve got that Purple Cap on my head, I’ve been quite ordinary with the ball.”

Looking ahead, Delhi Capitals will face Gujarat Giants in their upcoming match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Wednesday. The team will aim to carry forward the momentum from their thrilling victory against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
