Vishnu Saravanan, Indian Olympian, clinches gold at Europa Cup 2024 sailing event in Spain

India’s Olympian sailor Vishnu Saravanan clinched the gold medal in the men’s one-person dinghy (ILCA7) category at the Europa Cup 2024 sailing meet in Mallorca, Spain. Saravanan, who already secured a quota place for the Paris Olympic Games, triumphed with 17 net points, edging out the Netherlands’ Willem Wiersema.

Saravanan emerged victorious in two of his seven races at the competition, which witnessed 334 sailors battling challenging conditions with varying wind speeds. The event, hosted by the Reial Club Nautic Port de Pollenca, saw Australia’s Lawson McAullay claim the bronze with 22 net points.

In January, Saravanan made history by becoming the first Indian to secure a sailing quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics at the ILCA 7 Men’s World Championship 2024 in Australia. He also earned the bronze medal at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year, showcasing his prowess in the sport.

The ILCA7 category, part of the International Laser Class Association (ILCA) sailing class, features lightweight boats with a single mast. Saravanan’s recent victory highlights his exceptional skills and determination, solidifying his status as a top contender in international sailing competitions.

With his latest triumph at the Europa Cup and previous achievements on the global stage, Saravanan continues to raise the bar for Indian sailors and inspire aspiring athletes across the country. His success serves as a testament to his hard work, talent, and unwavering commitment to excellence in the sport.
