Experts recommend glaucoma testing for those over 40

Lucknow, March 12 (IANS) – Glaucoma, a severe eye condition that can lead to irreversible vision loss, is becoming increasingly common. Experts at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) stress the importance of regular eye checkups, especially for those over 40 and with a family history of the disease.

According to Siddharth Agrawal, a faculty member at KGMU’s ophthalmology department, glaucoma is caused by fluid buildup in the eye, which can damage the optic nerve. He highlighted the significance of being vigilant for symptoms such as eye pain, pressure, headaches, and seeing rainbow-colored halos around lights.

S. K. Bhaskar, another faculty member at KGMU, explained that proper drainage of fluid inside the eye, known as aqueous humor, is crucial for maintaining healthy eye pressure. He mentioned that excessive steroid use can also contribute to eye problems, emphasizing the importance of early detection through regular eye exams.

The number of glaucoma patients has increased by 10 per cent in the last five years, partly due to improved awareness and detection methods. However, many individuals confuse glaucoma with cataracts, leading to delayed treatment. Unlike cataracts, glaucoma can cause permanent vision loss if left untreated.

Bhaskar advised anyone over 40 experiencing vision problems to undergo eye pressure and retinal tests for early detection. Detecting glaucoma early allows for timely treatment and helps prevent vision loss. Ignoring symptoms or skipping regular eye checkups can have severe consequences, so it is essential to prioritize eye health.
