The Importance of Regular Thyroid Checkups for Women.

Thyroid Disorders Affecting Women Across All Stages of Life

New Delhi, March 12 (IANS) Thyroid disorders are highly prevalent among women, affecting them from puberty to pregnancy to menopause, as doctors emphasise the importance of regular check-ups.

Thyroid disease impacts the functioning of the thyroid gland, crucial in producing hormones like T3 and T4 that play a role in weight management, energy levels, internal temperature, skin, hair, and metabolism.

“Thyroid disorders can take a toll on women at any stage of life, with symptoms of fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, irregular menstrual cycles amongst others,” says Vaishali Naik, Endocrinologist at Lilavati Hospital Mumbai.

Age-related symptoms can also signal thyroid problems in women and children, impacting puberty, growth, irregular periods and pregnancy losses.

Symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, muscle weakness, hair thinning, depression, and slow heart rate are common, with mood swings, insomnia, and fatigue also being linked to thyroid issues.

The rise in thyroid problems among women calls for prompt treatment and consistent monitoring, says Internal Medicine Expert Chhya Vaja at Apollo Spectra Mumbai, stressing on the impact of stress on thyroid health and the need for stress management techniques, diet, and exercise for overall well-being.

As thyroid disorders continue to increase among women, regular check-ups and prompt treatment are essential to ensure long-term health and well-being.
