Vinesh Phogat responds to doubts about competing in two weight categories in wrestling trials, despite doping test concerns

New Delhi, March 14 (IANS) Olympian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has refuted media reports claiming she had not taken a dope test after the trials and disputed her qualification for the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in the women’s 50kg category due to competing in two weight categories.

In a statement on social media, Vinesh clarified, “There have been claims circulating that I did not undergo a dope test after the trials. I want to clarify that I, along with all other finalists, have undergone doping tests after both the senior nationals in the previous month and following the recent trials.”

She also addressed allegations by some media channels regarding her qualification status, stating that the United World Wrestling regulations allow contestants to participate in multiple weight categories during trials, contrary to what certain media channels are reporting.

Vinesh emphasized, “This was confirmed by the ad-hoc committee and officials, allowing me to participate in both the 50kg and 53kg categories during the trials,” adding that compliance with weight restrictions is sufficient for trial participation.

The wrestler explained her decision to compete in two weight categories was due to uncertainties surrounding the 53kg category’s qualification pathway, caused by disputes between the ad-hoc committee and the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

Despite facing scrutiny from the media and challenges arising from the protests, Vinesh expressed her commitment to fair competition and maintaining the sport’s integrity. She thanked her supporters and called for a transparent resolution to the situation.

In light of the ongoing controversies and the need for clarity in the rules governing Indian wrestling competitions, Vinesh’s participation in two weight categories has sparked debates, raising questions about the officials’ involvement in the trials despite court orders.
