RCB wins maiden title with help from Spinners and Ellyse Perry’s 35; beats DC by eight wickets in WPL 2024

In a thrilling final showdown, Royal Challengers Bangalore emerged victorious by clinching the Women’s Premier League 2024 title with an eight-wicket win over Delhi Capitals. Spinners Shreyanka Patil, Sophie Molineux, and Asha Sobhana collectively claimed nine wickets, while Ellyse Perry’s unbeaten 35 guided RCB to their first-ever WPL title.

The much-awaited triumph marked the end of a dream as RCB overcame Delhi Capitals to secure the championship and become the second winners in the history of the competition. Shreyanka shone with the ball, leading the wicket-taking charts with 4-12, while Sophie and Asha’s contributions restricted DC to 113. Ellyse’s steady innings ensured RCB chased down the target in 19.3 overs.

Initially, Delhi Capitals started strong with a blazing 61 runs in the Power-play, bolstered by Shafali Verma’s aggressive batting. However, RCB’s spin attack caused a collapse in the DC lineup, as they lost all their wickets for 49 runs. Shreyanka, Sophie, and Asha displayed exceptional bowling skills to dismantle DC’s innings and pave the way for RCB’s triumph.

In the chase, RCB faced some hiccups but managed to control the game with Ellyse and Richa Ghosh’s partnership. Ellyse’s boundaries and Richa’s crucial shots sealed the victory for RCB, sparking celebrations in Bengaluru. The win marked a historic moment for RCB in the WPL 2024 as they lifted the coveted trophy for the first time in the competition’s history.

Delhi Capitals, despite a strong start, faltered against RCB’s spinners and struggled to build a substantial total. Shafali’s aggressive innings of 44 and Meg Lanning’s contribution of 23 were overshadowed by RCB’s spin trio. Ultimately, DC succumbed to RCB’s bowling attack, finishing as runners-up in the WPL for the second consecutive time.
