The benefits of neurodevelopmental treatment for children with Down syndrome
New Delhi, March 21 (IANS) World Down Syndrome Day, observed annually on March 21, aims to raise awareness about the genetic condition. This year’s theme, ‘End The Stereotypes’, emphasizes the need for integrating individuals with Down syndrome and avoiding discrimination. Approximately one in every thousand children is born with Down syndrome, affecting about 30,000-35,000 children in India.
Mohini, MPT in neurology and paediatric physiotherapist at Artemis Special Children Centre, Gurugram, highlighted the importance of neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT) for children with Down syndrome. NDT is an advanced intervention that focuses on improving motor skills, coordination, and overall physical development through individualized treatment plans and multidisciplinary collaboration.
According to Mohini, incorporating technology such as virtual or interactive apps, along with early intervention and a family-centered approach, can lead to better outcomes, increased independence, and enhanced quality of life for individuals with Down syndrome. Light, regular exercise has also been shown to improve cognitive and physical health for those with the condition.
In a case study, Mohini shared the positive impact of NDT on a child with Down syndrome from Kashmir. After just three 45-minute sessions, the child showed improvements in head and trunk control, leading to enhanced sitting and initiation of crawling. Advanced NDT techniques may also target cognitive and social-emotional development in individuals with Down syndrome, enhancing overall well-being.
