Scientists discover a connection between sleep deprivation, joblessness, and heart disease

NEW YORK, April 3 (IANS) Researchers have identified a connection between unemployment, lack of education beyond high school, inadequate sleep, and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, particularly among Asian Americans, including Asian Indian adults.

The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, revealed that social determinants of health such as lack of insurance and education had varying impacts on cardiovascular disease risk factors across different subgroups. The researchers clarified that while an association was observed, it did not mean causation.

The analysis included 6,395 Asian adults, with 22 percent being Asian Indian. Asian Indian adults exhibited a 20 percent likelihood of suboptimal sleep and a 42 percent increased likelihood of insufficient physical activity, both significant risk factors for heart disease.

According to lead author Eugene Yang from the University of Washington School of Medicine, factors like neighbourhood cohesion, economic stability, and healthcare access are intertwined in impacting cardiovascular health disparities. Understanding these differences among Asian subgroups is crucial for reducing risks and improving outcomes.

Asian populations, particularly those of South Asian heritage, have higher rates of premature heart disease globally. Better understanding and addressing the social determinants of health can help mitigate cardiovascular risk disparities within these communities.
