Luis Rubiales, former Spain FA president, detained in corruption probe

Former president of the Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, was detained in Madrid following his return from the Dominican Republic. He is under investigation for alleged corruption related to receiving illegal commissions for staging the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.

Rubiales, denying any wrongdoing, was questioned after his detention but released shortly after, sparking speculation about the ongoing legal proceedings. Prosecutors are seeking a two-and-a-half-year jail term for him, further tarnishing his reputation amid separate allegations of sexual assault.

Spanish public broadcaster RTVE reported that Rubiales could appear in court on Thursday. The investigation has led to police searches at Rubiales’ home and the football federation headquarters, as well as multiple arrests in connection with the case, intensifying the scrutiny on the former president.

This scandal adds to the controversy surrounding Rubiales, who previously faced allegations of sexual assault involving a player after the World Cup final last summer. He resigned from his position amidst public outcry, vehemently denying any wrongdoing. The unfolding legal proceedings have drawn attention to his tenure as president of the Spanish Football Federation.
