Cameroon FA expresses regret over appointment of Belgian coach

Yaounde, April 3 (IANS) The Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) expressed their surprise and disappointment at the appointment of Belgian Marc Brys as head coach of the national men’s football team, stating that they were unaware of the decision.

The Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, revealed that Brys was appointed based on instructions from President Paul Biya. FECAFOOT stated that they were not informed about the appointment and deem it as a violation of a presidential decree granting them the authority to appoint coaching staff.

In a statement, FECAFOOT highlighted their intention to address this “regrettable situation” and communicate their next steps promptly. Brys was named as the replacement for Rigobert Song, who was removed in February after Cameroon’s disappointing performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire.

The federation was taken aback by the unilateral decision and is set to take action in response to the unexpected appointment. They are determined to provide an explanation for the situation and assert their authority in the selection of coaching staff for the national teams.
