Marizanne Kapp of South Africa disciplined for violating ICC Code of Conduct

South Africa all-rounder Marizanne Kapp reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during a Women’s T20I against Sri Lanka in East London. Kapp used inappropriate language and gestured aggressively after dismissing Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu.

The incident occurred in the 13th over of Sri Lanka’s innings when Kapp directed inappropriate language and gestures towards the pavilion after dismissing Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu. The ICC found Kapp guilty of breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

Kapp has been given one demerit point for her actions, marking her first offence in 24 months. Kapp admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by ICC International Panel of Match Referees. The on-field umpires Jacqueline Williams and Thomas Mokorosi, along with third umpire Kerrin Klaaste, and fourth umpire Lauren Agenbag levelled the charge.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 percent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points. If a player accumulates four or more demerit points within 24 months, they are converted into suspension points leading to a ban from playing. Demerit Points stay on a player’s disciplinary record for 24 months before being expunged.

This incident serves as a reminder to players about the importance of maintaining discipline on the field and adhering to the ICC Code of Conduct to ensure fair play and sportsmanship in cricket.
