Patanjali’s Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna issue unconditional apology before SC for misleading ads

New Delhi, April 9 (IANS) Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balkrishna of Patanjali Ayurved have apologized before the Supreme Court for misleading advertisements. They pledged to uphold the law and not make false claims about the medicinal efficacy of products. The court had earlier rebuked them for improper affidavits.

In response to a contempt notice, Ramdev and Balkrishna expressed their “unconditional and unqualified apology” before the Supreme Court. They promised to abide by the law and refrain from making any statements that could violate the undertaking given to the court last year.

Patanjali had assured the court that it would not make false claims about its products or advertise them in violation of the law. However, the court criticized Ramdev and Balkrishna for filing improper versions of affidavits and ordered them to personally appear in the next hearing.

The Indian Medical Association has called for action against Patanjali for violating the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954. This act prohibits the advertisement of products for treating certain diseases like diabetes and heart diseases. The court has not dispensed with the personal appearance of Ramdev and Balkrishna in the case.
