Jugador de tenis español Aaron Cortés suspendido hasta 2039 por amaño de partidos

New Delhi, April 10 (IANS) Spanish tennis player Aaron Cortes has been handed a 15-year ban and fined $75,000 after admitting to 35 breaches of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced. Cortes’ ineligibility period began on March 27, 2024, and will last until March 26, 2039.

The 29-year-old player, who reached a career-high singles ranking of 955 in September 2017, acknowledged his involvement in various corrupt activities between 2016 and 2018. These included manipulating match outcomes, accepting money to do so, failing to report corrupt approaches, betting on tennis, and bribing tournament officials for a wild card slot, as per the ITIA statement.

Despite cooperating fully with the ITIA investigation and agreeing to the imposed sanctions, Cortes waived his right to a hearing before an independent Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer. Throughout his ban, he is prohibited from participating in, coaching, or even attending any tennis events sanctioned by ITIA members like ATP, ITF, WTA, Tennis Australia, Federation Francaise de Tennis, Wimbledon, and USTA. The player has been fined $75,000, with $56,250 suspended.

This stern disciplinary action highlights the commitment of tennis authorities to maintain integrity and fairness within the sport. The ITIA’s strict stance against corruption serves as a reminder to all players and officials that unethical behavior will not be tolerated and will be met with severe consequences.
