Many festivals are connected to the Madurai Meenakshi Sundereswarar temple, which has a long history that spans several centuries and is referenced in early Sangam literature. These involve the Avani Thirunal, Thiruonam, and Thiruvathirai (Ardra) festivities. The Masi celebration, which has been observed for a very long period, is described in ancient literature such as Thiruppani Malai and Sritala texts. Meenakshi and Sundareswarar are driven through Madurai’s four streets on a carriage during this event.

It’s fascinating to note that each of the streets that encircle the temple are given names that correspond to the months during which the festivals are observed. Like, Masi roads for the festival that takes place between February and March. The celebration was lavish while Thirumalai Nayak was in power. Before mounting a state elephant in a parade to the shrine, the king would observe a fast and take a ritual wash. The Goddess Meenakshi would sit in a six-pillared mandap inside the temple as the priests carried the crown and sword. The Goddess would be given the sword and the crown when the ceremonies were completed, and she would wear the crown.
