The fifth of May or the Cinco de Mayo is a holiday. This day commemorates the victory of the Mexican army’s battle with France. On May 5, 1862, the Battle of Puebla took place. The Mexican army gained victory in the same Franco-Mexican War. Therefore, this day is also popularly known as Battle of Puebla Day.

History

Some individuals mis-conceptualize Cinco de Mayo as the day of Mexican Independence Day. However, this day celebrates the victory of a single battle. Benito Juárez was a member of the Zapotec tribe who was elected as the president of Mexico in 1861. Benito Juárez was a lawyer by profession. During that time Mexico was undergoing a financial crisis and credit crunch following continuous years of internal strife. Due to this, the new President had taken a lot of debt from the European government. In response to this, Spain, Britain, and France sent their forces to Mexico in demand of repayment. However, with tactical negotiations with Mexico, the forces were withdrawn.

Celebration

The majority of the commemoration of various occasions takes place in the town of Puebla, in Mexico. On this day people go on parades. Those who participate in the parade get dressed up in a similar type of clothing worn by Mexican and French soldiers. If people wish they can wear patriotic clothing as well. Retail shops and roadside vendors sell patriotic clothing and traditional Mexican dishes on this day. In countries like Canada and the US, people observe this day with their family members and friends.
