Annually the Purnima Tithi of the Hindu month Margashirsha is celebrated as Datta Jayanti. This festival is marked as it’s the birth anniversary of Lord Dattatreya, who’s considered to be the incarnation of all three tridevas: Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh. Talking about the origin of the festival, Maharishi Atri Muni’s wife Anusuya was famous in three lokas for her Prativata dharma. So, the three goddesses Mata Parvati, Mata Saraswati, and Mata Lakshmi decided to take the text of Anusuya, so they asked the three gods to go to Prithvi Loka in disguise forms and ask Mata Anusuya to have food.

The three deities did the same and put a condition in front of mother Anusuya that she should feed them naked. In such a situation, she revered her husband Maharishi Atri Muni, and understood that these three are Tridev who have come here to test her.

So Mata Anusuya took water from her husband’s kamandal and sprinkled it on the three gods so that they became just 6 months old children, then she fed them.
