The Black Asteroids, the Ghanaian FIFA eSports team, are determined to make history at the 2022 FIFAe Nations Cup. eSports has gained great popularity in Africa and the Black Asteroids have their sights set on becoming the first African nation to win the tournament. Unfortunately, their campaign was cut short last year, failing to progress beyond the group stage, which was ultimately won by Brazil. This year, their ambitions are higher than that, but first, they need to qualify for the final tournament. For that to happen, they need to do well in the Play-Ins.

Ghana is one of the ten member associations in the Middle East & Africa Division of an African team. This division is divided into two conferences, each with five participating member associations.

At the end of Matchweek 3, two teams from each conference will qualify for the 2023 FIFAe Nations Playoffs. The remaining eight teams will then compete in the 2023 FIFAe Nations Online Qualifiers, which could potentially welcome new participants.

2023 FIFAe Nations Cup in a Nutshell

The FIFAe Nations Cup is an internationally acclaimed eSports tournament featuring EA SPORTS™ FIFA 23 in a 2v2 format with one substitute. Since its launch in 2019, the event has seen immense success, with teams from various countries vying for a chance to compete. Unfortunately, only 24 teams can qualify for the final tournament, therefore a qualification phase is required to narrow down the contenders.

The qualifiers start at a domestic level, in which every country gets to decide for itself which three players are going to represent the nation. Next, come the regional qualifiers a.k.a. FIFAe Nations Series Play-Ins.

The Play-Ins are separated into five zones – Europe, Asia & Oceania, North & Central America, South America, and Middle East & Africa – each of which is split into two divisions. The top two teams from each division get a direct ticket to the final tournament, while the remaining teams get to take part in further playoffs.

Those who proceed to the FIFAe Nations Cup will have the opportunity to compete for a share of the $400,000 prize pool.

High Hopes for the Black Asteroids

Last year, Ghana did not perform well in the tournament, but they are aiming much higher in 2023. The roster of players is a major factor in this and this year they have a strong line-up. The National team players who have begun training for the 2023 qualifiers are Prince Jonas Azomyan (prince_Jonas007), Habibu Sulley Abdulai (Flow Burner), Frank Kpakpo Adotey (wondhakidGH), Eric Kwadwo Frempong (Fremmps), and John Dela Nutifafa-Kennedy (Flowburner).

The Ghana Football Association has put in a lot of effort to support the Black Asteroids in their preparation for the 2023 Play-Ins, going so far as to fly the team to Dubai for training. Unfortunately, the team did not begin the Play-Ins in top form. After nine matches, the Black Asteroids have a 4-3-9 record, but there is still hope for them to qualify for the FIFAe Nations Cup 2023 by dominating in Week 3.

FIFA eSports Getting a Lot of Traction All Over Africa

No matter the results of Ghana’s eSports team in the 2023 FIFAe Nations Cup, the reality is that FIFA’s popularity in Africa is on the rise. This is a phenomenon that is not restricted to Ghana but throughout the whole of the African continent. It is quite evident why FIFA eSports has become increasingly popular in Africa – the continent is known for its great love for football.

Additionally, the success of African teams in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has further fueled the popularity of FIFA eSports in the region. Morocco, Ghana, Cameroon, Senegal, and Tunisia all participated in the tournament, demonstrating the strength of African teams in the sport.

All five African teams performed impressively in Qatar, but it was Morocco that truly made history.
