When you think of Halloween, images of Halloween decorations, lanterns, spooky outfits, and trick-or-treating spring to mind. Halloween festivities in the contemporary day include gatherings and parties for both adults and children. In many nations, people celebrate Halloween on October 31, the night before All Hallows’ Day. Most places do not practice religion during holidays.
Halloween was historically observed to signal the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. But as time went on, Halloween came to be associated with evil, and people began to observe it as the Festival of the Dead. Many people think that on Halloween, the line between both the human as well as the dead blurs, and ghosts and demons are free to wander. It is thought that the Celts invented Halloween.
Hundreds of years ago, Celts resided in Ireland, northern France, and England. Whenever the summer ended as well as the New Year started on November 1st, they celebrated with a holiday they named Samhain. But many Celts also thought that just before the New Year, ghosts came to Earth. As a result, the current holiday of Halloween is linked to the supernatural.
Halloween is more than just a holiday in the Anglosphere; it’s a feeling. Imagine a time when children could knock on neighbors’ houses, begging for a treat, and then scare their parents with cruel tricks if they weren’t granted their demands. (Those of us who grew up in Indian suburbs find it difficult to conceive asking the local aunty for anything, much fewer chocolates, and candy. Considering that, log kya kahenge?).
However, in the US, today is the day when kids go trick-or-treating. This includes donning outrageous costumes and prowling about the neighborhood after dark while threatening people with candy. Another enduring element of Halloween is jack-o-lanterns.
