Hariyali Teej is an auspicious occasion celebrated by Indians across the states. This is a huge occasion for Mata Parvati and Lord Mahadev. The devotees are the most excited ones among others. Hindus celebrate three main Teej festivals across the country.

These are Kajri Teej, Hartalika Teej, and Hariyali Teej. These festivals hold immense importance and significance as they fall in the sacred Hindu months of Bhadrapada and Sawan. This festival, Hariyali Teej is commemorated by the devotees in the month of Sawan, and on the third day of Shukla Paksha.

Hariyali Teej is honored two days before the observation of Naga Panchami. As per Drik Panchang, this festival falls on 19 August 2023. The tithi embarked on 18 August at 8:01 pm and ends at 10:19 pm, on 19 August.

Besides this, Hariyali Teej usually falls a month before the celebration of Hartalika Teej. Thus, Hartalika Teej will be observed on 18 September, this year in 2023.

History and Significance

Hariyali Teej is a highly auspicious festival for Hindus and especially Hindu married women. Women belonging to the months of Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan commemorate this day by keeping 24 hrs nirjala vrat in which fasting is done without water. Women pray to Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati for their husbands’ prosperous and long lives.

This festival marks the union of Mata Parvati and Lord Shiva. On this day, Lord Mahadev accepted Mata Parvati after her spending 107 births in penance as his consort. It was only in Devi Parvati’s 108th birth, he could finally win over Lord Shiva and come to be known as Teej Maata.

Celebrations

On this auspicious occasion, Hindu married women pray to Maa Parvati and Lord Shiva for the long, prosperous, and successful lives of their husbands. They color their hands with mehendi, wear ornaments and do shringar. They donned new clothes and observe a day-long fast even without water. Various gifts are exchanged on this day between parents and their daughters which includes bangles, henna, ghewar, and homemade sweets.
