Holi, the festival of colors is in the corner. The importance of colors in Holi is as much as that of Holika Dahan. Holika Dahan is also popularly known as Chhoti Holi in the several North Indian States.

There is a famous mythological story behind the celebration of Holika Dahan with characters like Hiranyakashipu, Prahlad, Holika, and Lord Vishnu himself.

It is said that years ago an Asura king Hiranyakashipu was ruling the earth. He did severe penance and received a boon from Lord Brahma. In the boon, he asked to be immortal but Lord Brahma refused to give him this boon so instead of this he asked to be not killed by any creature, deity, demon, or human being, neither in the day nor in the night, neither on earth, nor in the sky, nor at home, nor outside, nor with any weapon. After getting this boon from Lord Brahma, he started to believe himself to be God.

So he ordered everyone in his kingdom to worship him instead of any God. But his son Prahlad was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Even on the order of his father, Prahlad continued his devotion to Lord Vishnu.

Hiranyakashipu decided to kill his son, so he ordered his sister Holika to sit in the fire with Prahlad in his lap. Actually, Holika had got a boon from God that fire would never burn her. But when Holika and Prahlad sat on the fire, Prahlad started chanting Lord Vishnu’s name. And by the grace of Lord Vishnu, Holika got burnt, while Prahlad survived. Since that time the people have been celebrating Holika Dahan to burn the evils of society. The festival of Holika Dahan will be celebrated on Thursday, March 25 this year.
