Every year on August 17, Indonesia Independence Day is observed. As this federal holiday honors the 1945 proclamation of Indonesia’s sovereignty from the Netherlands. The term “Hari Ulang Tahun Kemerdekaan Republik Indonesia,” simplified as “HUT RI,” or simply “Hari Kerdekaan,” used to be used to refer to the event in Indonesian.

Following the declaration, there were four more years of conflict until the Dutch government granted them an official acknowledgment of their freedom. More than 300 years had passed since Indonesia came under Dutch colonial control. Indonesia also suffered immensely under colonial control, which is why Indonesia had to engage the Dutch government in a protracted and difficult war to obtain their freedom.

The pronouncement of freedom was proclaimed on August 17, 1945, and Mohammed Hatta and Soekarno recited the document to commemorate the occasion. And because it signaled the conclusion of colonialism in Indonesia, this occasion was extremely significant. The government also declared it a public holiday in 1946.

Despite the long period of Dutch colonial rule in Indonesia, the primary independence movement against the Dutch began in the 1920s after the Dutch violently suppressed all previous attempts at independence. However, the Dutch rulers in the Dutch East Indies ultimately made a little reform in 1918 and permitted the installation of a Volksraad, a People’s council that was chosen by parties.

However, it was more like a show-off act because the Dutch declined to give Indonesians any say in national and international law. As a result, the conflict persisted and even simply disappeared because many Indonesian independence champions chose a violent route and diplomacy failed to make any headway.

However, it was after the Japanese invaded Indonesia and drove away the Dutch in 1942 that things began to change. They also mistreated Indonesians, though, and were forced to leave in 1945 after losing World War 2. Indonesians then proclaimed their independence, but the Dutch refused to recognize it, sparking a four-year-long freedom fight that ended with an Indonesian victory over the Dutch.
