According to the beliefs behind Karwa Chauth, Mata Karwa lived with her husband near the Tungabhadra river. One day, when her husband went to take a bath in the river, a crocodile caught him and started dragging into the river. Karwa’s husband started calling her.

Hearing the sound, as soon as Karwa ran to the river, she saw that the crocodile was taking her husband in the river. Seeing this, Karwa immediately took a raw thread and tied the crocodile to a tree. The chastity of Karwa was so strong that that raw thread could not tangle.

Then Karwa screamed Yamraj and prayed him to give life to her husband and death to the crocodile. But Yamraj refused. Hearing this, Karva got angry and asked Yamraj to curse. Fearing his curse, Yamraj immediately sent the crocodile to Yamlok, as well as gave life to Karva’s husband. This is the reason why Karwa Chauth fast is observed and is believed just like Karwa took her husband back from the death, in the same they wil protect their husbands.
