Lohri is one of the most auspicious festivals celebrated a few days before Makar Sankranti every year. It is mostly celebrated in the northern states of India including Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu region. This year in 2023, Lohri will be celebrated on the 14th of January. The festival also goes by the name Lal Loi and Lohadi. It marks the official commencement of harvest season. People like to celebrate it by wearing new clothes, bonfires, eating jaggery, popcorn, and sugarcane, and exchanging gifts.

The night of the festival is considered the longest night of the year. After this, the days start to be longer and nights become shorter, this is because the sun starts to move north. This is called Uttarayan. This is why people celebrate Lohri as it is a festival of the Sun and fire god. As per the Hindu calendar, this festival marks the end of winter and the beginning of the “Magha” i.e sun changing its course.
