Raja Parba is also popularly known as Mithuna Sankranti. It is a three-day-long traditional festival commemorated in the Indian State of Odisha. Primarily, this day is a celebration of the onset of monsoon, fertility, and womanhood. As per Odia culture, this festival holds significant mythological and historical importance.

Raja Sankranti Date

Raja Sankranti or Mithuna Sankranti is a festival celebrated for three long days. The first day of the celebration is known as Paheli Raja. The following day is known as Mithuna Sankranti. The third day of this festival is known as Bhudaha or Basi Raja. The day succeeding the third day is regarded as Basumati snana and the preceding day of Raja Sankranti is known as Sajabaja. This auspicious festival falls in mid-June in Sukhla Pakhshya. It marks the arrival of Ashadha month and the end of Odia month Jyeshta. In 2023, from 14 June to 16 June, Raja is being celebrated all over the state.

Significance

Raja Sankranti is an agriculture-oriented festival. It is prevalent in the coastal districts of Odisha for 3 days. This day celebrates the menstrual cycle of mother earth, which is associated with fertility and good crop production. The second day of Raja Parva, Mithuna Sankranti holds astronomical and cultural significance. On this day, the Sun transit into Gemini as per the Hindu calendar. This day honors the change in the agricultural cycle and season. As mother earth is considered menstruating on these three days, digging of soil and plucking leaves from the trees is strictly prohibited.

Celebration

Raja has derived its name “Raja” from a Sanskrit word, ‘Raja’ which implies menstruation. Therefore on this 3-day long festival, women are treated like queens and are kept away from indulging in any kind of daily chores. Unmarried girls especially have certain restrictions. They cannot pluck leaves, or walk on the soil barefooted. Separate types of swings are also decorated for women to enjoy. They sing folk songs, dress up in traditional attire, and eat “pithas.”
