Vesak is a holiday traditionally commemorated by Buddhists in south-east and South Asia along with Mongolia and Tibet. Vesak is considered one of the most important festivals celebrated by Buddhists.
Vesak is an auspicious festival marking the bird’s anniversary of Gautam Buddha, who was born as Prince Siddhārtha Gautama and later founded Buddhism.
Vesak or Buddha Purnima is observed on a full moon day in the Hindu month of Vaisakha. Every year it usually falls in April or May. Buddhists residing anywhere in the world celebrate this auspicious day with great joy and devotion. They participate in numerous rituals and ceremonies on this day.

This year, in 2024, Vesak or Buddha Jayanti falls, May 23, Thursday. According to Hindustan Times, 2024 marks the 2586th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha.
History and significance
It should be noted that the exact dates of Gautam Buddha’s birth and death are not known. However, according to the speculations of historians, Lord Buddha’s lifespan was between 563-483 BC.
Lord Buddha was born as Prince Siddhartha in Lumbini, Nepal. He joined Nirvana at 35. Once he realized that this life is limited and everyone has to meet their ultimate demise, no matter what their plan is. Therefore, he left his luxurious and lavish life in search of enlightenment.
After multiple searches, he ended up at Bodhgaya in Bihar state of India, very meditated for days and days together. After meditating continuously for 49 days, he achieved enlightenment, is also known as Nirvana.
He taught people to be selfless, sacrifice materialistic expectations in order to get rid of recycling of unlimited wants and desires.
Buddh Purnima is observed by people as it involves the court principles of Buddhism: enlightenment, compassion and peace. Vesak is a way of celebration of spreading the message of harmony and peace in the world.
