ICC World Cup 2023: Shubman Gill Playing In Match Against Australia Doubtful, Doctors Suspect Shubman Has Dengue

ICC World Cup 2023 kicked off yesterday with the inaugural match played between New Zealand and England and New Zealand has thrashed England by Nine wickets. However there is bad tiding from the Indian dressing room. It is reported that Shubman Gill, the most prolific scorer in recent ODI fixtures is suffering from high fever and it is suspected that he is suffering from Dengue. This makes it unlikely that he will be playing in the first encounter of India with Australia.

Shubman Gill to be out of India’s World Cup Opener Against Australia

The absence of Shubman Gill will be acutely felt in this very important and high profile match and the Indian fans will be sorely missing Shubman’s fireworks on the cricket field. India has for long been suffering from a suitable opener and Subman had fitted in the role perfectly. However his absence will be a big setback for the Indian team. In all probability he will be replaced by Ishan Kishan. India will take on the Kangaroos in its first encounter of the World Cup 2023.

Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill is a big hitter of the ball and his performance in the last few matches has been exceptional. However he is suffering from high grade fever and will not be playing in the India –Australia match. Shubman was tested for Dengue on October 6 and the results as per ANI citing sources. The  reports have been positive. Shubman was suffering from fever after landing in Chennai.

As per a communiqué by BCCI Dengue tests have been done on October 6 and he will have the tests again on Friday. Only then it can be confirmed if he will or will not play in the forthcoming match with Australia.

Dengue is a viral ailment and recovery often takes 8 to 10 days to fully recover. If he is suffering from normal viral fever, he can still play after taking medicines. However the final decision will be solely at the discretion of the Medical Board who will examine Shubman Gill and decide if he is fit to play.

As already mentioned Shubman was having a great stint with batting in the last few matches. In 20 ODIs in 2023, he has scored 1,230 runs at an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of just above 105. He has scored 5 centuries and 5 fifties this year, with the best of 208. The ICC World Cup 2023 opening match was held on 5 October with New Zealand decimating England by 10 wickets.
