History

When India became independent on 15 August 1947, there was an atmosphere of panic in the country due to riots and an influx of refugees. This caused many administrative problems and then the army had to come forward to control the situation. Then a special military command was formed to ensure law and order during the partition. But the head of the Indian army was still of British origin. Field Marshal KM Cariappa became the first Indian Army Chief of independent India on 15 January 1949, when there were about 200,000 soldiers in the Indian Army. Earlier, the post was held by Commander General Francis Robert Roy Bucher. Since then Army Day is celebrated every year on 15 January. KM Cariappa was the first officer to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal. Let us tell you, before becoming Commander General, he led the Indian Army in the 1947 Pak-India War.
