After more than 300 years of Dutch rule, a handful of nationalists proclaimed Indonesia’s independence on August 17, 1945. Three weeks prior to the national holiday, preparations get underway. Banners in the colors red and white are displayed on buildings.

Malls display the flag’s colors and offer special deals. There are red and white decorations covering the presidential palace, government buildings, and residents. The words “Dirgahayu RI,” which translates to “Long Live Indonesia!” are written all over the country’s cities and towns. People in Indonesia also use ‘Umbul-umbul’ (flags in red and white colors) and banners to decorate streets and pathways for celebrating Independence Day.
