Today is International Day for Biological Diversity. It is celebrated every year on May 22 all over the world. The main objective of the UNO behind this was that all the people in the world should be alerted about biodiversity so that the world’s biodiversity can be maintained and protected. Different types of animals, birds, and plants satisfy each other’s needs, whose life depends on each other. In the true sense, the richness of biodiversity makes the earth suitable for living and living, but it is ironic that the ever-increasing pollution-like monster is having such a dangerous effect on the environment that many species of fauna and flora are slowly disappearing.
According to jagran.com, International Day for Biological Diversity was first initiated in the 90s. When the “Earth Conference” was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992 under the auspices of the United Nations. Special emphasis was laid on environmental protection in this conference. After this, on December 29, 1993, it was celebrated for the first time as Bio-diversity Day. After this it was celebrated continuously till the year 2000 on 29th December. Since 2001, this year is celebrated on 22 May.
In modern times, there is a need to pay attention to the topic of biodiversity. Due to global warming, there has been a significant change in the environment. For this, emphasis is being laid on environmental protection. According to the surveys conducted by the Botanical Survey of India and the Zoological Survey of India, about 49,000 plant species and 89,000 animal species are found in India. India ranks tenth in the world on the basis of plant diversity, eleventh on the basis of area-limited species, and sixth on the basis of the origin and diversity of crops.
