International Day against Dams, for Rivers, Water, and Life was the previous name for the day. Several initiatives have been launched in India to protect rivers from dams or to prevent their development. One of them was the Narmada Bachao Andolan.

History

The International Day of Action Against Dams & For Rivers, Water & Life was established by the attendees of the First World Conference of People Affected by Dams in March 1997 in Curitiba, Brazil. Delegates from 20 nations agreed that the International Day of Action would coincide with Brazil’s Day of Action Against Big Dams on March 14. The major reason for creating this day is to urge fair and environmentally friendly management of our rivers, recover the integrity of watersheds, and raise voices in harmony against harmful water construction projects.

Celebration

A picture campaign might be started as a way to celebrate.
