Maha Shivratri will be celebrated on 8 March 2024. It is usually celebrated on the 14th day of the lunar month during the month of Phalguna or Magha, the day right before the new moon. The festival is celebrated with grandeur across India.

Devotees of Lord Shiva offer milk to Shivland and worship Lord Shiva. Hindu temples around the country are decorated with flowers and lights.

Some of the devotees like to keep fast, meditate as well as recite mantras or prayers. Rituals are performed to attain mental peace. The festival is regarded as a time to purify one’s soul, mind and body. It encourages fresh beginnings. Additionally, keeping a fast on this day is considered as highly auspicious.

It also holds great cultural significance. Worshipping Lord Shiva is equal to worshipping Lord Shiva for the entire year. According to ancient beliefs, worshipping Shiva on this day can help you achieve salvation.

There are many stories and folklore related to the festival. It is a celebration of the divine reunion of Maa Parvati and Lord Shiva. There are also stories of Shiva drinking the Halahala poison. Thus adding more cultural importance to the festival.

According to one ancient belief, it is a night when Shiva did a heavenly dance of creation, destruction and perseverance. Also, on this day, Lord Shiva drank the poison that came out during the Samudra Manthan and saved the world. Because of this, he turned blue as he held the poison in his neck. Due to this, he is also known as Neelkantha.

The most popular legend is the one that talks about Lord Shiva’s union with Mata Parvati. According to legend, Goddess Parvati in her many incarnations worshipped Lord Shiva to win the affection of Lord Shiva.
