Every Year, to honour the Press Council of India, 16 November is celebrated as National Press Day in the country. Press Council of India serves as the regulator that discharges professional standards for media in India. It aims to preserve the freedom of the press and to regulate and improve the standards of the press in India.

To save the principles and freedom of the press in the country, In 1956 the first Press Commission proclaimed a committee. Their effort led to the foundation of the Press Council of India in 1966, after 10 years. The Press Council of India is responsible for preserving Press Freedom and for regulating and enhancing press standards. Talking about its present, Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad is currently the chairman of the Press Council, serving the position for last 7 years.
