NGT refuses to allow three armoured diesel cars intended for PM’s security. Find out the reason why

The National Green Tribunal has rejected a plea by Special Protection Group to extend the lift of three Renault diesel armoured vehicles that are part of PM Narendra Modi’s security. These vehicles have been in service since December 2014 and are an integral part of SPG’s technical logistics.

The NGT declined to extend the registration of the three armoured vehicles due to their BS-III certification, which does not comply with the ban on 10-year-old diesel cars. The SPG had requested the renewal of registration, citing their importance in providing security and logistical support for the Prime Minister’s protection.

Despite the SPG’s plea, the NGT stated that no relaxation can be granted for the registration or extension of registration for these vehicles. The Renault armoured vehicles, equipped with a powerful diesel engine, are essential for security operations but do not meet the environmental requirements set by the NGT and Supreme Court.

These armoured vehicles, known as Renault MD-5, have a 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine capable of producing 215bhp of power and 800 Nm of torque. They can carry up to 10 people, withstand off-road conditions, and have a top speed of 110 kmph. The NGT’s decision highlights the strict enforcement of environmental regulations even in cases of national security.
