History

Princeton University was founded as College of New Jersey at Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1746. New Light Presbyterians founded the college. In 1896, the name changed to Princeton University at the culmination of the institution’s Sesquicentennial Celebration. The University was often known as Princeton College, Old North, Nassau Hall and Nassau.
