Ratha Saptami also known as Rathasaptami is an auspicious Hindu festival. Other names for the festival include Achala Saptami and Surya Saptami. The day falls on the Saptami day of Shukla Paksha of Magha month. This year in 2023, it will be celebrated on 28th January. The festival is dedicated to Surya Dev. It marks the birthday of Surya Dev, as mythological scriptures. The god mythologically is depicted as a god riding his chariot attached to seven horses towards the north-easterly direction in the northern hemisphere. The 7 horses represent the 7 colours of the rainbow. Additionally, 7 horses also represent 7 days of the week i.e Sunday to Saturday. 

Sun worship

The festivities of the Ratha Saptami include offering arghya with holy water to Surya Dev. People honour the god by offering red flowers, lamps, incense and camphor to name a few. Everything is done while facing the sun. Sun has always held high importance in ancient astrology as well as modern science. This is so because it gives life to everything including flora and fauna. 

Additionally, Surya Purana is recited on this day. The charioteer of Surya Dev is believed to be paralyzed and is named Arun. Most children at the time of their birth are paralyzed and mute,” says Surya Dev, who removes any defects through his light power. This worshipping of Surya Dev is mentioned in the Vedas of Hinduism. Its traditions and beliefs can also be found in other cultures and countries such as Egypt, Mesopotamia and China.
