The date (13 February 2023) will be marked as a historic date in the record sheets of world cricket as the auction for the world’s first-ever Women’s Premier League took place on this day in Mumbai. A total of 449 players were auctioned for the inaugural competition starting on 4 March. India women’s vice-captain Smriti Mandhana was the first player to go under the auction hammer.

Smriti Mandhana makes big money at WPL auction

From the very first second, Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore seemed to be ready to spend a huge amount on the left-handed opening batsmen, However, in the end, RCB won the battle by adding their potential captain to the squad for ₹3.4 crores.

Let me tell you, Smriti Mandhana remains the most expensive player of the season as none of the auctions went beyond the amount she grabbed.

As soon as he achieved this milestone, social media went down a comparison street, comparing the amount with Pakistan men’s team captain Babar Azam’s PSL salary.

Notably, last year, PSL club Peshawar Zalmi bought Babar Azam for ₹1.38 crore, which is less than half of Smriti Mandhana’s WPL salary.

RCB whops big names in the team

Along with Smriti Mandhana, Royal Challengers Bangalore also brought in big names like Australia’s star all-rounder Ellyse Perry and New Zealand captain Sophie Devine, English skipper Heather Knight, and South African skipper Dane van Niekerk at the WPL auction.
