History
The University of Chicago was opened in 1892 by the American Baptist Education Society. John D. Rockefeller earlier funded the formation of the University. Retail merchant Marshall Field also donated 10 acres of land in Hyde Park for the campus of the University. Architect Henry Ives Cobb designed the campus in Gothic style.
