Every year on April 23, World Book Day is celebrated across the world. This day is also called World Book and Copyright Day. World Book Day is celebrated to recognize and promote the benefits of reading, publishing, and copyrighting books. UNESCO started celebrating this day on April 23, 1995. April 23 marks the death and birth anniversary of several other prominent writers, such as Maurice Drum, Haldor K. Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Playa, and Manuel Mejia Vallejo. Therefore, it became clear to UNESCO to choose April 23 to celebrate World Book Day.
In different countries of the world, this day is celebrated in its own way. Somewhere books are distributed free of cost, while competitions are organized at some places. The date for the World Book Day celebration was decided by UNESCO at the General Assembly, which was held in Paris in 1995.
