World Malaria Day was observed for the first time on April 25, 2008. The purpose of celebrating this day by UNICEF was to bring public attention to this dangerous disease, which forces millions of people to lose their lives every year. According to the World Health Organisation, India represents 3% of global malaria cases. India had once almost eradicated malaria. However, malaria returned to India in the early 21st century. Malaria mainly occurs when bitten by an infected female Anopheles mosquito.
