World Teachers’ Day is celebrated on October 5th every year. It is a day where we honour and pay our respect to all teachers and guidance counsellors. It is celebrated to recognise and respect the role teachers and mentors play in every student’s life. The reason it is celebrated on 5th September is that it is the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. 

According to UNESCO, World Teachers’ Day is a day to celebrate how teachers are transforming education but also to reflect on the support they need to fully deploy their talent and vocation, and to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally. It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.”

As we mentioned World Teachers’ Day is celebrated to acknowledge the contribution teachers have made to everyone’s life across the globe. This year the day will fall on Wednesday with Dusshera. 

The origin of World Teachers’ Day goes back to 1994. The year when it was first recognised by  United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). According to UNESCO, World Teachers’ Day is co-convened in partnership with the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF, and Education International (EI).

Every World Teachers’ Day is celebrated with a specific theme. This year’s theme is “The Transformation of Education Begins With Teachers.” The celebrations of World Teachers’ Day 2022 will be focused on the commitments and actions discussed in the ongoing  ‘Transforming Education Summit 2022’ conducted in September.
