The celebration of National Maritime Day has expanded to include the entire maritime industry and domestic waterborne commerce, as well as the brave men and women who have dedicated their lives aboard a merchant ship. The holiday was created by the United States Congress on May 20, 1933. On May 22, 2002, Military Sealift Command celebrated National Maritime Day with a memorial service held in Washington, DC. The Secretary of the Navy, England, laid a wreath in the Anacostia River at the Washington Navy Yard in honor of the fallen sailors. From our origins as 13 British colonies, the Merchant Marine has been a pillar in the foundation of this nation’s prosperity and security through every period of peace and conflict.
