Raja Ram Mohan Roy – Social Reformer Birth Anniversary on 22 May

Raja Rammohun Roy could be labeled as the father of modern India. His pioneering works enabled the nation to eliminate the social malaise in the society like Sati Practice, child marriage, polygamy, etc. In history, he is credited as the first person who opposed the sati practice, which was rampant in Bengal.

Raja Ram Mohan Roy had seen his sister-in-law committing sati, and her shrieks remained forever embedded in his psyche. So he took an oath that he would strive to remove this barbaric practice from Indian society.

But apart from this, there are many such works that Raja Ram Mohan Roy is still seen with respect. He was a great educationist who realized that English education is fundamental for the upliftment of Indian society. The speed of the English language shaped the Indian Independence Movement. Raja Ram Mohan was born on 22 May 1772 in the village of Radhanagar in the Hooghly district of Bengal. His father’s name was Ramkanto Roy and mother’s name was Taarini. Ram Mohan’s family was Vaishnava, which was very militant in matters related to religion. He was proficient in many languages, including Bangla, Persian, Arabic, and Sanskrit.

He was against Hindu idol worship and superstitious traditions. He strongly opposed the evils and superstitions spread in society. But his father was a follower of a traditional and staunch Vaishnava Brahmin religion.

Due to the anti-traditional path of Raja Rammohan Roy and his opposition to religious beliefs, there were differences between him and his father. And seeing the quarrel increasing, he left his house and went towards the Himalayas and Tibet. It laid the foundation for his future struggles.
